Do your nails seem to break more in the winter?
Do your nails just totally break off at the sides?
Do your nails just feel really dry and brittle?
If you
answered yes to any of the questions above then read on:
Here are
some of the reasons that could be causing you to have nails that
split on the sides or just totally break off at the nail bed.
A lot of people experience more nail
breakage in the winter months than any other time of the year.
This is
most likely due to dryness.
The
reason I say this is through all the years of doing nails it was a
seasonal issue with a lot of clients.
One of
the biggest factors with nail breakage is dryness:
That is
why I try and remind everyone to get ahead of the game and do more
moisturizing before the winter months approach us.
When we
have our heat on it can cause us to be much dryer than normal. I know
I am a lot dryer in the winter months.
Another
thing that can cause the nails to be more brittle and dry is extra
hand washing:
I think
most of us do more hand washing in the winter to help protect
ourselves from catching colds.
Then
come the wonderful word age: Age can be another contributing
factor to dryness. Did I say that A word again ;-)
The age
thing really can have an effect on nails breaking because as we get
older we just tend to be a lot dryer.
Over
use of chemicals:
There is
a reason that you should only change your polish once a week and that
is because the removers being used to often can also have a drying
effect on your nails.
Now
here's the good news: If your nails are not dry due to some sort
of medical issue the fix is some what simple.
Moisture-Moisture-Moisture:
If your nails are already in bad shape and you are having a lot of
breakage it may take you awhile to notice a difference.
But if
you can just put that moisturizer close by so you will remember to
use it faithfully.
I think
you will be pleasantly surprised at your results!
I can't
stress enough the importance of extra hand lotion and a good cuticle
oil this time of year.
