Cheap nails at whose expense? Is saving a couple bucks really worth it!
I know a lot of you may have already seen the news in the NY Times about the cheaper priced salons and how they can afford to offer nails at such low prices.
Well being in the industry for so many years I can tell you I have heard a lot of rumors. Now it looks like some of the rumors are finally being proven to be true.
We have always heard the stories of how the workers have been mistreated. Things like being way underpaid, bad living quarters, very little food and such.
I would also like to add another reason why the cheaper salons may be so cheap and yes it's sanitation!
It is things you need to know!
I always felt like they had to be cutting corners on sanitation.
Sanitation products are not cheap and I always felt like there was no way they could be doing proper sanitation at the prices they offered.
Here are just a few stories that we heard through the years.
Not to gross you out but help you see what may be going on and to hopefully protect you.
We would hear things like they were using windshield washer fluid in the sanitizers.
Because the windshield washer fluid is blue like the hospital disinfectants but way cheaper than a hospital grade disinfectant.
Let me tell you, windshield washer fluid dose not sanitize and the proper disinfectant is for your protection to kill things like HIV, MRSA, Herpes, H1N1 Athletes Foot just to name a few.
Using the same dirty files on the every client that comes in.
Think about what may have be under the ten clients nails that they used that file on before they hit your fingernails. Yuck!
Using MMA (methacrylate) which is dental grade acrylic on nails is illegal in most States and can also do damage to your nails.
I have had clients come to me to have this stuff removed.
I would not be able to get it all off and they would just have to let it grow off.
Not taking the time to properly clean the pedicure stations.
Most pedicure stations not only need the tub cleaned many of them also have a backflow pipe that needs to be cleaned between clients.
I once had a client tell me she saw things floating in a pedicure bath before the client even put their feet in. Yuck again!
This is just a few of the many things that could be going on at your cheaper salons.
In my opinion the risk far out weigh the little bit you may save on your nails and could actually cost you more in the long run if you end up at your doctors office because of poor sanitation.
Your health is not worth the risk!
I think this has been going on for years and glad to see they are finally looking into it.
Hopefully it will help some of the workers have a better life and also give you a safer environment for your nail services.
Things like this hurts everyone, the mistreated workers, you and your safety, the salons that are trying to compete and spend the extra money to do their job right and it gives the industry as a whole a bad name.
We should not support it!
